Queerli is a mobile app created to connect LGBTQ+ members on college campuses. Entering college coming from an unaccepting past can make the transition difficult, especially with how the current political climate is affecting their resources. Queerli aims to ease their college transition with resources, events, news, forums, and social media profiles specifically for the LGBTQ+ community.
USER RESEARCH
Our team interviewed college LGBTQ+ students, ages 18-25, from different universities across Kentucky. After two rounds of 1:1 interviews, it was discovered that most users shared the same experience in that their campus resources significantly lacked in community, communication, or accessibility— collectively creating feelings of isolation during their college experience.
HEURISTIC EVALUATIONS
After two rounds of heuristic evaluations, a concept was nailed down and confirmed the need for a LGBTQ+ mobile application. Initially, the wireframes displayed some spacing and legibility issues. Wireframes were refined to ease the users' experience navigating the application, then the magic began.
Queerli is designed for the user to be able to customize as many aspects of the app as possible. They can pick their interests to curate their feed, choose their profile color, connect to their school and city, etc.
Many LGBTQ+ are losing access to centers and club on campus. This app provides them with as much comfort and control as possible. The bright color theme fits the theme of Pride, and the inclusion of choosing your own pronouns provides a sense of identity no longer provided on Meta platforms.
The resources page is one of the most useful tools on the app. Users can search for credible resources regarding community issues, mental health, sexual wellness, and housing—whether it be on or off campus. Once the user finds the resource they're looking for, Information will either be provided in the app or direct the user to the source extracted.
The news section of Queerli allows users to keep up with all news LGBTQ+. The Queerli platform searches credited sources and selects articles relatable to college LGBTQ+. Users can toggle between local/national news and campus news.
The Queerli forum provides a safe space for users to interact, share information, or ask questions. All forum posts and responses have the option to be posted anonymously, allowing users to ask questions they may feel uncomfortable asking on other social platforms or with their name attached—such as advice on coming out—with a whole college community facing similar issues there to help and answer.
The Events page is a great tool, especially for students/campuses that might feel less safe publicly planning LGBTQ+ related events. Events can be filtered by local and nationally organized, campus-oriented, etc.
Queerli profiles are super customizable! Most social platforms allow users to make their profile private; Queerli users can make any post—photo or text—private individually as well. This provides as much versatility as possible for users to only share what they are comfortable with, or gain the confidence to post their true identity slowly. They can customize their profile with whatever banner and header colors they wish.
